While cancer researchers continue their quest to develop chemotherapeutic drugs that destroy cancer cells, but are harmless to normal cells, it turns out a natural substance already exists ‘WHICH DOES JUST THAT’!!

“Not only does Grape Seed Extract target the cancer cells effectively, it also leaves healthy cells alone”

One study in 2014 revealed the bio-active compounds in grape seed extract selectively targets many types of cancer cells. These findings indicate a beneficial effect for grape seed extract, with researchers finding that it required less GSE to kill advanced cancer cells than it did cells in the early stage.

Grape seed extract contains ‘proanthocyanidins’, which are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom and are present in high quantities within the seeds of the grapes.  Grape seed itself is full of antioxidants, phenolics and phytochemicals – which remove harmful free oxygen radicals from cells and protects the body from adverse damage done by the hundreds of toxins we absorb daily.  It is thought that the extract kills cancer cells by a process of oxidative stress.

“The combination of resveratrol and grape seed extract is very effective at killing colon cancer cells,” said Vanamala, who is also a faculty member at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. “And what we’re learning is the combination of these compounds is not toxic to healthy cells.”

To put these findings into perspective, Molly Derry, PhD candidate at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, more clearly explains:

“A colorectal cancer cell can have upwards of 11,000 genetic mutations – differences from the DNA in healthy cells. Traditional chemotherapies may only target a specific mutation and as cancer progresses more mutations occur. These changes can result in cancer that is resistance to chemotherapy. In contrast, the many bio-active compounds of GSE are able to target multiple mutations. The more mutations a cancer presents, the more effective GSE is in targeting them.”
